How to Get Your Kids to Do the Chores

*Originally published on our publishing group's site NanoResort.com

Parents around the world rejoice whenever they welcome a new child into their lives, that is, until they become teenagers. Getting your older kids to do their chores can be almost impossible, but these crafty parents came up with ingenious solutions.

Keeping it simple

Some adults can't even figure out how to work their washing machines, so this parent made their child's chores pretty straightforward. Thanks to these sticky notes, this parent's kid can't go wrong when doing the laundry.

Keeping it simple

They just have to ignore every button on the machine, throw in their clothes, and close the door. While this couldn't be any easier, we do wonder whether the kid's dirty laundry made it into the washing machine or stayed on their bedroom floor.

Leave mom and dad alone

These parents left their kids with only a couple of things to do while they chose to sleep in one morning. All they wanted was some alone time to catch up on some sleep, and they didn't need any interruptions from their children.

Leave mom and dad alone

The kids' main chore was to be quiet enough to let their parents rest, which meant no antagonizing each other or whining about it. The kids are even allowed to have fun, they just have to stick to the clearly defined rules on the sheet.

Always watching

There is something a little unsettling when thinking that your laundry basket is always watching you. Many kids treat their bedroom floor like a laundry hamper, but that isn't going to fly in this household.

Always watching

The laundry basket and this kid's parents are teaming up together and are making sure this child sticks to doing their chores. All they have to do is fill the basket with laundry, it's pretty simple, but we can imagine there were some major sighs coming from the child this note was for.

An anti-chore

While it mightn't be that common, sometimes parents have to try and find a way to get their kids to stop trying to help them. This parent decorated their home with fake flowers, yet their child seemed to think they needed watering on multiple occasions.

An anti-chore

The parent was at least happy to see their child trying to help, but perhaps they need to direct that helpful energy somewhere else. At least the kid won't have caused any serious damage to these flowers.

Momma don't work here

The last thing a working mom wants to have to do when getting home is more work. While she may have to put food on the table and do her chores around the house, the least her kids can do is make her life a bit easier.

Momma don't work here

It seems this microwave gets used pretty often, but not cleaned anywhere near as much. Given that some kids can live off of microwaveable foods, we guess this person has had enough of dealing with food splatter in their kitchen appliances.

The shortlist

This parent isn't asking too much from their kids, but just enough to keep the house in shape. It's not the most extensive list of chores any kids have ever been left, but if they want to use the WIFI code, they better get them done.

The shortlist

The internet is a great place for wasting time by playing games or keeping up with social media, but it's also proving to be a useful tool in the home. Now parents have something to use to make their kids more helpful around the house.

Hang your towels up

For some reason, it seems as though this father's child can't do something as simple as picking a towel up from the bathroom floor. Instead of hanging the towels up and reusing them, this kid feels the need to get a fresh towel with every shower.

Hang your towels up

That means they leave a towel on the floor after every shower, waiting for the magical towel fairy to come along and pick them up. This fairy isn't playing that game, and this dad may be at the end of his rope.

Nobody wants ants

All this mom is asking her kids to do is to pick up after themselves. It shouldn't be that hard to do, but that doesn't mean they are going to do it anytime soon. This mom has pointed out that unless her children want to find a nest of ants exploring their room…

Nobody wants ants

They really ought to bring their dishes to the kitchen. Then, once they've got them that far, all they have to do is rinse them and put them in the dishwasher.

Say it with a sticky note

These sticky notes suggest this mom knows her kids all too well. She's confident her child will forget to do their chores before leaving the house, so she made sure they got the message. Leaving these little notes on her child's car means they have to actively ignore what their mom is asking if they are going out.

Say it with a sticky note

We can imagine this kid did the first chore after finding the note, only to return to their car and find the second note on the steering wheel.

There are consequences

Sometimes kids need to learn there are consequences to their actions. This wasn't a chore, but Chela was asked by their parents to not eat any of the cereal. Instead of obeying their parents' request…

There are consequences

Chela helped themselves to the cereal and will have to live with the wrath of her parents. She was charged $3, which came directly out of her piggy bank, which may make Chela think twice about disobeying her parents' orders in the future.

Santa's workplace injury

Workplace injuries are no joke, and they can even happen to the one person kids would never wish to harm, Santa Clause. These parents wanted their kid to tidy their room, so they faked an injury to the big jolly man who wears a red suit.

Santa's workplace injury

They claimed that because this kid's room was so untidy, Santa won't be coming back for fear of getting injured again. That's certainly one way to tire your kids out on Christmas Eve to make sure they go to sleep early!

It's not what you think

Many parents will leave a thoughtful note in their kids' packed lunch just as a reminder of how much they love them. This note, however, is not one of those. Instead, it's a note telling the kid that they ran out of napkins at home…

It's not what you think

So it looks as though they are going to have to make do with this piece of paper. At least this kid's lunch came with a Toblerone, so it wasn't all bad.

No special treatment

You would think that your parents would lighten the load in the chores department when it comes to your birthday. This kid might have woken up expecting to have a day off from shoveling the sidewalk, but McKenna's parents had other ideas.

No special treatment

She was wished a happy birthday by her parents but swiftly reminded of her chores while her parents are out of town. Hopefully when they come back, they at least bought McKenna a birthday cake to make up for giving her chores.

You have one job

Some children are very good and are willing to complete a long list of chores set out for them by their parents. Other kids can barely do the basics of everyday life, like putting on their pants. This kid only has one job to do while their parents are out for the day…

You have one job

And that's to make sure they put on some pants before their dad gets home. It doesn't seem like an unreasonable request, but that doesn't mean this kid actually did put some pants on.

Unimpressed Tooth Fairy

It seems as though parents have figured out that when it comes to receiving gifts or money, their children suddenly become interested in chores. If you tell a kid to tidy their room just because, you might not get what you want.

Unimpressed Tooth Fairy

Tell that same kid that the Tooth Fairy isn't going to come until they tidy their room, and it becomes a different story. Amazingly, this kid's mom was even willing to help tidy, as long as she was asked nicely.

My name is Diesel

What a coincidence that this car's name is Diesel, and that's the same fuel that it runs on. When kids and parents are sharing a car, it often ends up being the parents who are the ones filling the gas tank up.

My name is Diesel

That leaves the kids free to run it out of gas, and wait for mom or dad to fill it up again. This parent has had enough of finding an empty tank, so they got creative in asking for their child to start filling it up.

Hiding the key

This parent understands that most of the things their child wants to do involve electricity. All this kid has to do is look around their room to find the missing key to the lock. While they are searching for the key, they might as well tidy up their mess.

Hiding the key

Before long, this kid will have found the key and made their parent happy by tidying their room in the process. Then the kid can get back to their electronic device without distraction.

Not a dishwasher

Many parents end up having to clean up after their kids. It's kind of the deal when you have children, but there comes a certain point in their lives when they have to start looking after themselves. This dad is sick of having to wash up his kids' dirty dishes…

Not a dishwasher

So he has left some pretty simple chore instructions to help himself out. All his kids have to do is use the dishwasher with buttons to help Brian's balding problem slow down.

Just lock the backdoor

For some reason, kids seem totally incapable of locking the house after they leave. Maybe it's laziness, or maybe it's forgetfulness, but this parent wants to make sure it's one chore their child never forgets.

Just lock the backdoor

They have left a not-so-subtle hint that just about anyone could come in through the unlocked backdoor and commit a violent act. In fact, this kid's parents have even given the intruder a helping hand by presenting them with a weapon upon entry.

Threat of violence

This mom has worked very hard making sure the kitchen is nice and tidy before leaving the house. All she is asking her kids to do is to make sure whatever mess they make, they clean it up afterward.

Threat of violence

It's not the most complicated of requests, but there is a good chance these kids might not follow it. Well, maybe they wouldn't have followed their mom's request if she hadn't used the threat of violence for justice if they didn't obey her demands.

Trash warning

Kids can beg their parents for weeks for a new toy, but the moment they get their shiny new thing, they don't appreciate it. This parent kept finding their kids' stuff all around the home, so they put it all in one bucket.

Trash warning

Now, these parents will discover just how much their kids value their stuff when it's taken away from them. If they want their stuff back they have to trade doing a chore for it, plus, if they leave it too long, the stuff will be thrown away.

On thin ice

Homemade ice cubes benefit just about everyone living in the household. They keep your drinks cool, but it often only seems like the parents who are the ones filling up the trays properly. This parent has grown tired of trying to get some ice…

On thin ice

Only to be covered in water by another block that hasn't frozen yet. They have left some simple tips to make sure their kids know exactly how to deal with the ice trays in the future, for everyone's benefit.

Taken

Some kids like to treat their moms and dads as though they are their own personal maid service. That's not what parents are for, and this mom or dad has had enough of being taken advantage of. They are now responding to their child's laziness with threats of disconnecting the internet.

Taken

That really ought to get their attention because it seems to be the one thing they care about more than anything else. Of course, this can all go away if the kid just cleans up their own kitchen mess.

Save the carrots

There is only one thing this parent is expecting from their child, and it's an unusual one. They simply don't want their kid to trade this bag of carrots for a Twinkie. We're guessing the kid has a history of giving their food away for something they find much more appetizing.

Save the carrots

Of course, if it were up to most people, they would trade some boring vegetables for a bunch of carrots, but this kid has to stay strong and resist temptation.

The ungrounding game

Unfortunately for this kid, they have gotten themselves grounded for doing something they probably shouldn't have. Luckily for them they can earn their freedom, in the space of just one evening, all they have to do is complete a bunch of chores.

The ungrounding game

It's like a get out of jail free card for this kid, all they have to do is dedicate one day to doing what their parents are asking. If Cassidy ever wants to hang out with her friends again soon, she'll give in to her parents' wishes.

Where to find food

We can't help but wonder if this parent is expecting their hungry child to try and source food in this order. We're pretty sure eating the cat is a bad move, mostly because the cat won't go down without a fight, and that's asking for trouble.

Where to find food

Starving isn't really an option, so it looks as though this kid's only real choice is to head on down to the basement, where the feast can begin. Unless they're really super keen to try and take on the cat.

Feed the dispenser

It's the little chores around the house that kids don't do that can be the most frustrating. Putting some toilet roll on the holder benefits everyone who uses it, so why wouldn't you put a roll on when you finish another?

Feed the dispenser

Perhaps the kid just thinks the roll of toilet paper magically finds its way there by itself. This parent decided to try and relate to their kid and gave this toilet roll holder a face to try and make them see what they are doing wrong.

The Hunger Games

The choice is a simple one for the kids who live in this house. If they want the WIFI password, all they have to do is clean the kitchen and provide some evidence. Their mom is pretty smart because she wants a picture with a box of crackers in it…

The Hunger Games

To prove that her kids aren't just reusing an old photograph. It's a pretty simple game, but one that these kids will have to play if they want to get their precious internet.

In response

As with many parents trying to get their kids to do something, the key is to keep it simple. This parent only had one request, that their kids won't touch the kefta that they are having for dinner. Of course, thanks to the way the message was written, these kids couldn't help but have a little fun at their parent's expense.

In response

They made a joke that their parent's note was written like Yoda from 'Star Wars,' but they also did promise not to eat the kefta.

Passive-aggressive

There are levels to getting your kids to do their chores. These parents seem to have been successful in managing to get their kids to do the laundry, but there are just a few things they could be doing better.

Passive-aggressive

The most important one is making sure that they take the lint out of the dryer, that way, they can avoid setting their house on fire. Of course, this message from dad is laced in sarcasm to make sure his kids understand the point he's trying to make.

Too much like hard work

The only chore this mom gave her son, Julian, was to make sure he had a great day. It's a nice and simple request and one that was seemingly made with love. Despite meaning well, this was apparently an opportunity for Julian to disobey his mom…

Too much like hard work

Even when she's trying to make him happy. Instead of having a great day, Julian was determined to have a bad day and even replied to his mom's note to make sure she knows it.

Feed me

This is yet another example of when kids won't resupply the toilet roll holder with a fresh roll. It's not a difficult job, but these parents have had to create a personality for their toilet roll holder to get their kids to put more on.

Feed me

This might get the message across, or these kids might just roll their eyes at their parent's attempts at humor and continue to leave it well alone. We can only hope the kids found the face endearing and restocked it.

Get Daniel at six

Dads are known for their particular brand of humor, and this kid didn't get to escape his father's when he was left a chore to do. While the chore itself was relatively simple, to "get Daniel at six," this father tried his best to have a laugh at his kid's expense.

Get Daniel at six

Instead of just leaving a note with his request, this father took aim at their kid's internet browsing history and the comments they made. Perhaps the kid isn't the only one who needs to work on their humor.

The does and don'ts

It seems as though Eric was initially left the note on the right by his mom, but his dad found the note and tried to make things funnier. Eric's mom just wanted him to do a few simple chores, but his father has a whole list of stuff he doesn't want his son doing.

The does and don'ts

Maybe Eric was going to the beach with some friends, and his dad just wanted to remind his son about all of the things he should stay away from.

The Tidy Up Tub

This parent isn't messing around when it comes to their kids putting their stuff away. If they haven't put the stuff away by bedtime, then whatever is left out will be going into the box. If it's still there at bedtime the next night, it's going in the trash.

The Tidy Up Tub

It looks as though this tub is currently empty, so we guess this parent's kids got the message pretty quickly. Either that or all of their toys have already been thrown away.

Let's 'rap it up

This mom is all about the tough love, and she created a rap to really make sure her kids got the message. They are under threat of being grounded, so they better listen up and take her words seriously.

Let's 'rap it up

It seems as though talking tough isn't exactly in this mom's nature, because she left a much nicer note underneath, albeit still with the threat of grounding. Sure their mom might be sweet, but she's not messing around when it comes to a tidy home.

Just a few ground rules

These parents left only a few ground rules for their son Joshua to abide by. All he has to make sure he does is lock the door, don't let more than three girls in the house at the same time, and avoid drinking and driving.

Just a few ground rules

The one thing that's not clear is whether Joshua is a ladies man and might have more than three girls in his house, or whether his parents are playing a joke on him. Either way, it's all pretty good advice from his parents.

Say it with a meme

When it comes to being a parent, one of the most important things you can do is learn how to communicate properly with your children. These parents know their kid isn't likely to wash the dishes of their own accord, so they decided to speak in a language they might understand.

Say it with a meme

Memes. They have taken the simple meme idea and relocated it from the internet right onto their kitchen sink just to make sure their kid really understands the message.

Only one request

This dad is keeping it simple when it comes to his child's chores. He only wants his kid to do one thing while he is out, and that's wash their face. This dad thinks his kid is the most wonderful person they have ever met…

Only one request

But there is just one problem, and he thinks they look like a hobo. All this father wants is to make sure his kid is clean, and that's nothing but good parenting, even if his method is a little unusual.

Clean up after yourself

One of the biggest struggles between parents and their kids is getting them to clean up after themselves. While it might be expected of adults, some children aren't quite ready for that responsibility yet.

Clean up after yourself

This mom reckons her kids are at that stage and has left this fun little note to make sure they understand her. She is simply hinting that her kids should clean up after themselves, especially whenever she isn't even at home to look after them.
